Hawaii school officials have a new strategy for filling teacher vacancies: Bring principals along on mainland recruitment trips. Makaha Elementary Principal, Mr. Shigeta, talks about the recruiting efforts at Marist College and how we support new teachers.
RAMP stands for "Recognized American School Counselor Association Model Program." Our counseling team engaged in a rigorous internal program review process to ensure we are providing a high quality, standards and needs-based counseling program. This accomplishment represents three years of dedicated and challenging work that is already paying dividends for our students. On April 22, The Hawaii Elementary and Middle School Administrators Association (HEMSAA) honored Cecile LaMar from Makaha Elementary as the 2018 Hawaii Outstanding Vice Principal. at the Hale Koa Hotel. The National Association of Elementary School Principals is committed to preparing assistant principals to step into the principal role. The NAESP honors assistant principals who are doing a superb job in their roles. She will be traveling to Orlando for the NAESP conference in July where she will be honored with the other Outstanding Assistant Principals across the United States.
A HI AWARE School is one that has a score of 70% or higher (Makaha 97%) on TFI, teaches the 17+ 1 Proactive Classroom Management Strategies, is Using Data on Belief Barriers to shift towards restorative practices and trauma informed care rather than punitive practices. They also include the HI Aware staff in their Multi-Tiered Systems of Support team and collaborate on very challenging youth.
Congratulations! Makaha Elementary School's counseling program has now met the criteria to become a Recognized ASCA Model Program by the American School Counselor Association. Makaha is one of more than 800 that have received this national recognition since the program’s inception (2003).
Mr. Shigeta traveled to Washington D.C. for the 2017 NDP event, held October 12-13, to be honored among the nation's distinguished principals from other states.
